Sailing into Student Teaching with SAE Visits

As I prepared for Students Teaching, I was able to complete SAE Visits with Mrs. Bier. It was exciting to see the variety of SAEs that my students had and hear about their goals going into their next year of SAE.

For my first assigned visit I will be talking about visiting Ryleigh Minor and her SAE. Ryleigh is a Senior this year at Shippensburg Area Senior High School and is serving the FFA Chapter as the Vice President. Beyond her time spent with the FFA, Ryleigh is on the school's Basketball Team!

In preparation for showing her Rabbits, Mrs. Bier and I visited Ryleigh's Rabbitry at her home. For her Rabbitry, Ryleigh raises, breeds, and shows Holland Lop rabbits. To prepare for the visit, Mrs. Bier had looked over Ryleigh's record book to be sure that she was ready for her show. Additionally, Mrs. Bier prepared for the visit by determining the schedule to share for the show with each student we visited that day.

I think that Ryleigh's Rabbitry is so unique and interesting. I would rate her SAE as a very proficient one, seeing as she started with just one rabbit, and has learned to show and breed rabbits, meeting a lot of her original goals.  Through my interaction with SAEs so far, they are evaluated based on the growth of the overall project and the student. Ryleigh's SAE has really grown in size, and helped her to grow as an individual. Recommendations were made for Ryleigh's rabbits regarding which rabbits should be taken to the show, to find the most success! It was a wonderful experience getting to see Ryleigh show, being the first rabbit show I had ever interacted with.  At her show, Ryleigh received Best of Breed and Best Opposite of Breed for her Holland Lops.

Overall, I learned a lot interacting with SAEs with Mrs. Bier. Students with SAEs at Shippensburg keep their records on the official record keeping system, the AET. Mrs. Bier grades the SAE as a part of the Ag Leadership course which I am teaching during student teaching.

  1. Liz,
It always amazed me how much I learned as the educator when I conducted my SAE visits! I really enjoyed having the students teach me, as I know this is important for both me, as well as the student!
