Interest Approach to Compression!

This week in AEE412 Lab, we each spent time presenting an interest approach we thought was creative for one of our lessons. The interest approach I presented was from my Compression and Carburetion Unit of my Small Gas Engines Class.

My lesson is titled What is Compression and Why is it Important? and my interest approach was a quick review of the 4 strokes of a small gas engine. To say this lab had a learning curve is an understatement. After reflecting on Wednesday's lab, I can clearly see that my interest approach was really explaining "the why" before I began the activity which should be included in the content portion of my lesson. Because I formed the activity to be so content based and explained what was happening during each stroke as we walked through the "cylinder space" (taped boxes on the carpet), this was more of a class activity instead of an interest approach.

For reference, I now know that an interest approach needs to meet the needs, wants, or aspirations of the class. The interest approach can then focus on competition, self improvement, altruism, or creativity of students.

To edit my lesson, I will move my taped box activity down to the content section, and add to my interest approach. I will incorporate Morgan's idea of the gallery walk of job listings. I will create 3 job listings and have students walk around the room and discuss each as a group. Then, as a class I will have the students come together and discuss questions like "why does this apply to you?", "how do these relate to our class?", and "what are some things you notice that are similar about the listings?".

I am glad that I was able to try out this activity in lab and learn more about interest approaches this week. I also really enjoyed everyone else's interest approaches and hope in incorporate them in my classes.

  1. Liz, I think that your activity this week sounds like it would be a lot of fun for students to do during the content portion of your class. It is a good way to get them out of their seats. It sounds like you learned a lot this week and that is great because it means you are growing. Keep up the great work!

  2. Liz, I think you and I went through something similar this week. I too struggled with making an interest approach that was appropriate. I learned that mine should be more of a review activity but I definitely liked the idea of yours. I liked how this activity got them out of their seats and got them actively thinking about the lesson. Good job!

  3. Liz, from watching your Edthena video and now reading your reflection I think you did something that I struggle with and that critically evaluating myself and then making a plan to do better next time. Girl you have an awesome content activity and would love to see this lesson taught in its entirety with the tweaks you have suggested. Keep doing great things!

  4. You did a great job this week! I know that it was a little frustrating to put in all of your work into that interest approach and it turn out as more of a content activity but, I know you will take away what you need to adapt this lesson and make it even better than it already is. :)
