Week 1 of Senior Year!

This first week of our semester went by so fast! For our first 412 Lab we were assigned a random topic to teach our classmates. This was such a great experience of learning hands on tasks like origami, chess, and tying a bowline knot.

My assignment for our lab was to teach our class about the parts of a castle in the middle ages. This was a super fun experience that tested my creative ability in Google Slides as well as my teaching skills since I only had 10 minutes to complete my objectives. I originally thought that this was a very abstract topic, but after breaking down the castle into its many pieces, I thought this seemed very familiar, like teaching ruminant anatomy.

This exercise related to what I know about learning and teaching. Students (a.k.a. our preservice educator peers) responded well to the hands on learning approach of the knot tying and origami. I was also able to incorporate being relatable to the students by explaining the postern gate by relating it to the anterior and posterior anatomical terminology.

One major take away I took from this experience was that a lot of the topics we may cover as Agricultural Educators will require us to do our research. Before standing up in front of my peers and talking about this castle from the Middle Ages, I did some research about each of the parts, and learned some extra needed information about the keep as well as learn about more examples to give the students.

Another take away was to always be adaptable. I was unsure about how to give the assessment for this lesson, but after reviewing once with my classmates, the assessment flowed easily and we were able to reuse my review to help them grade their tests.

After participating in all 6 lessons for my lab, I can honestly say that I look forward to working more with my classmates and that I am very impressed by the teaching ability they are bringing to the table!

Shout out to Grace for teaching me and the rest of the class how to tie a bowline knot! Her acronym for remembering the process will stick with all of us for a long time!

  1. Liz,
I am so excited to take on AEE 412 lab with you this semester! I think you did an awesome job teaching your first lesson, and I had a lot of fun learning about the castle parts. One thing I enjoyed was how much you found related to other subjects or topics and how you used that to help us learn and remember some of the castle parts. It truly showed how much effort you put into planning for your lesson. I am looking forward to more fun times!

  2. Ms. Holtry, Though I did not attend your section of lab, I agree with the reflection of how as educators theres going to be topics we do not know about. That is 100% okay because we can do our research and educate ourselfs better on the topic to then present to students.

  3. Liz Holtry, I cannot wait to work with you more this year! Your interactive slides in your presentation were a great addition. I am going to need you to show me how you did that sometime!
